Andera (pronounced ann-DER-ah) is a province of Viridia. As the largest of Viridia's provinces, Andera encompasses much of central Thadria.
Geography
Officially, Andera's borders are delineated to the east and west by the Caerno and Casabon rivers, respectively. In reality, however, Viridia no longer has control of parts of the east, where the plagues spread out of Erenon. To the south, Andera includes the central Thadrian highlands but stops short of the Penmaerd Forests, which instead fall within the province of Penmaerd.
Andera is geographically quite diverse. The north is largely covered by temperate forests, expansive plains, and prosperous farmlands, while the uplands to the south are quite dry and arid.
Settlements
The capital of Andera is Arsarus, located along the Eagle Head River. Other major settlements in the province include the following:
Inhabitants and culture
As is the case with Viridia as a whole, most of the inhabitants of Andera are human, though they are joined by smaller populations of other ancestries, including ratfolk, half-orcs, goblins, and half-elves.
The population of Andera is largely clustered in the north - the cities of Urshu and Highwater are the only major settlements of the elevated and dry south. The province is economically heavily rooted in agriculture. After the provinces of Pashaltia and Camantan, now Pasuhalta & Kamman, former breadbaskets of the Dominion, declared independence in Y9620*, Viridia became increasingly reliant on Andera to feed the large urban populations of the west. The senatorial families of Andera have used this situation to their advantage, quickly gaining outsized influence both in the senate and in the high society of Viridian elites.
Following the outbreak of the plagues in Erenon in Y9613*, Viridia moved a sizable contingent of its legions to the border between that province and Andera. Most of these legions remained stationed in the region even as the crisis in Erenon began to stabilize. For several centuries they maintained infrequent patrols along the new border, primarily to keep watch for any carriers of the disease that might emerge, but in recent decades their role has shifted. With calls from Erenite leaders for resettlement, particularly those issued by Sircathe Wriys, the legions now follow orders to halt the growing stream of Viridians venturing into the once plague-wracked lands in search of new opportunities and wealth.
