Tumunzar

From gronkfinder

Tumunzar (pronounced too-mun-ZAR) is a province of Viridia. It holds a unique distinction as as the Dominion's only autonomous province, left to the control of the traditional leadership of the Tumunzari dwarves.

Geography

Tumunzar is by far the smallest of Viridia's provinces, encompassing only the core Tumunzari dwarven heartlands of the Tumunzari Hills. The province is completely landlocked. Beginning with the northeast and moving clockwise, Tumunzar is bordered by Casabon, Andera, Ertan, and Attalea Major.

The Tumunzari Hills are quite a rugged region. Now mostly covered by grasslands and exposed rock faces, the forests of the area were long ago felled for material to build the nearby cities and for fuel to power the forges of the dwarven communities.

History

As Viridia expanded east in the eighth millennium, the largely human nation encroached on the territory of the Tumunzari dwarves. The dwarven cities of the area were prosperous and considerably more unified, politically, military, and culturally, than any rival the growing Dominion had yet encountered, and no easy foe for the legions. After small skirmishes between the Viridian military and the dwarves brought inclusive results, the kingdom attempted a different approach. Emissaries approached the dwarven high council with an offer - become part of the Dominion peacefully and provide material to support the kingdom's expansion, and in return keep the traditional leadership of the dwarves intact. The high council deliberated and stalled, but knew that while they might be able to keep Viridia at bay for a time, the fast-growing nation would eventually overwhelm them. They accepted the treaty in Y7822*, becoming the first, and so far only, autonomous province within the Dominion.

Settlements

The capital of Tumunzar is Moruk. Other major settlements in the province include the following:

Unlike with all other Viridian provinces, in Tumunzar dwarves, primarily of the Tumunzari heritage, account for the majority of the population. Humans, ratfolk, and some half-orcs live in the region as well, though mostly within the northern settlements of Karch Mard and Iron City.

Compared to their kin in Barat Rkund, the dwarves of Tumunzar have adopted more of the culture of those surrounding them. Their practices and society are much like those of the primarily human regions of Viridia, and they often de-emphasize the worship of their traditional gods in favor of those of the Chaskan pantheon.
