Herren (pronounced heh-REN) is a province of Viridia. As rulers of the southeastern-most of the Dominion's provinces, far away from the nation's capital, governors of Herren have rather more latitude than Viridian administrators elsewhere.

Geography

Officially, Herren encompasses all Viridian lands south and east of the Amani and Karve rivers. After the orcs of Hkarzda declared a new khanate out of Viridian territory, however, the provincial rulers have functionally lost control of the west.

Herren wraps around the Karn Andur, encompassing much of the range's foothills. Viridia respects the territory of the dwarves of Barat Rkund, however, and does not claim any of the mountains themselves. The landscape of Herren is generally quite rocky and hilly. Near the coast the climate is quite mild, with warm summers and cool winters, but the temperatures and weather of the interior can be somewhat more variable.

Settlements

The capital of Herren is Orhassu, located on an island just off the southern coast of Thadria. Other major settlements in the province include the following:

Inhabitants and culture

As is the case with Viridia as a whole, most of the inhabitants of Herren are human, though they are joined by smaller populations of other ancestries, including orcs, half-orcs, and dwarves.

The people of Herren have been greatly influenced by their proximity to Dalbanu. Their worship of the Chaskan pantheon often takes on distinctly Dalbanu forms, and two cities, Kussara and Eastmount, even have patron deities. Herren is culturally divided between the cosmopolitan port cities of the coast and the communities of the interior, which tend to be far more traditionalist.

Many scholars believe the province takes its name from the goddess Harinna, perhaps by way of the Chaskan language, which is now functionally extinct in the region.
