Penmaerd (pronounced pen-MARED) is a province of Viridia. Located in central Thadria, Penmaerd is sparsely populated and largely wild.
Geography
Penmaerd encompasses the entirety of the Penmaerd Forests, as well as some of the foothills of the Pike Mountains in the west and those of the Karn Andur in the east. To the south, it is bordered by the Amani and Karve rivers. To the north, its territory ends at the edge of the central Thadrian highlands.
Small parts of the province today lie under the control of Hkarzdan orcish clans.
The Penmaerd Forests and the grasslands surrounding it are home to a number of megafauna, specifically glyptodons and chalicotherium. It is unknown why the glyptodons have evolved such heavy armor, as they have no natural predators remaining in the region, though it has certainly helped protect them from the hunters who seek their bony plates. The chalicotherium, in addition to living wild, are sometimes tamed and used as mounts or pack animals within the provinces of Herren and Penmaerd, where the roads are of a lesser quality than elsewhere in Viridia.
Settlements
The capital of Herren is Felaveli. Other major settlements in the province include the following:
Inhabitants and culture
As is the case with Viridia as a whole, most of the inhabitants of Penmaerd are human, though they are joined by smaller populations of other ancestries, particularly half-orcs and ratfolk. The region was once home to a large number of cyclops but today few remain, mostly isolated villages and hermits.
Penmaerd is the poorest and least developed of all Viridian provinces. Except for its forests, the province has little in the way of natural resources, and any attempts at large-scale logging efforts are stymied by the difficulty in getting the lumber to the coasts where it would be more useful and valuable. Most inhabitants of Penmaerd make their living as farmers, hunters, or in small cottage industries for their local communities. Felaveli, Kasan, and Telipinu are the only cities of any size in the province. The vast majority of settlements are instead small, self-sufficient villages.
Though the people of Penmaerd worship the Chaskan pantheon, they also retain some pre-pantheonic beliefs and practices that have long since declined elsewhere. In particular, some within the province continue the old Thadrian traditions of hero-worship, the veneration of deceased great figures who accomplished great feats in life. Various churches and temples located in the more populated regions of western Thadria have sent missionaries to the province with the aim of stamping out such beliefs, but the villages of Penmaerd are isolated enough, and their people stubborn enough, that this worship has continued effectively unabated.
