Tomb Lake is a large lake near the southern edge of the Aban Steppe. The lands around the lake are considerably more verdant than is the rest of the steppe, with many forests around its southern shores especially. Many peoples live around the lake, nomadic targai and settled gatai alike, drawn in by the plentiful water and excellent grazing lands.
A number of rivers feed into Tomb Lake. The Alder Bark and White rivers begin in the Cage to the east, while the Blue and Taomasin rivers flow out of the Broken Wheel Hills to the south.
Tomb Lake is especially important to the Urkhaim dwarves. Many centuries ago, when the dwarves lived in the southern steppe, they began a tradition of burying their dead around the lake, both in the surrounding forests and quite near the shoreline. Even after their escape to the Northern Wall they have maintained this practice, traveling for weeks across the steppe to inter the deceased.
