Ninurta (pronounced nin-UR-tah) is a major city in western Thadria, located on the eastern shores of the Sea of Ersas. Formerly a major Viridian city, Ninurta has been largely under the control of the breakaway orcs of Hkarzda since Y9936*.
Most of Ninurta is built upon the tall cliffs that overlook the Sea of Ersas. Smaller sections of the city, including the docks, are located at sea level at the base of the cliffs. Connecting the parts of the city are a series of steps, paths, and cargo elevators built into the rock walls.
Rooms and chambers connected by a large network of tunnels have been dug into the cliffs beneath the city. Though these types of constructions are not unknown in western Thadria, Ninurta has by far the most extensive underground complex in the region. Built in multiple levels to a depth of over 100 meters, the under-levels of Ninurta are large enough to house the entire population of the city along with their livestock, food stores, and enough resources and amenities to outlast a prolonged siege.
The subterranean parts of Ninurta have been critical to the Hkarzdan orcs, allowing them to retain control of their sole port city. The city is the only one controlled by the breakaway factions that the Viridian legions have attempted to recapture, as it falls outside the region in which the orcs were given autonomy under the Viridian legal codes. Several small assaults have been attempted by the legions in the decades since Viridia lost control, in Y9937*, Y9941*, and Y9959*. Each time they had success in taking the docks, the lower city, and even sections of the upper city, but were unable to fully secure Ninurta after its defenders and much of its populace retreated into the heavily-trapped underground. As of Y9976*, the city remains in Hkarzdan orcish control.
