Akhmis (pronounced OCK-miss) is a city in the southern reaches of Khapesh. Far away from other major population centers or ports, only around 8,000 people live in Akhmis, making it the smallest major city in upper Khapesh. The city is built around a large ancient fort that was constructed thousands of years ago to guard against Khapesh's long gone enemies on the southern border. In the distant past, Akhmis thrived as the last stopping point for travelers and settlers heading south to join communities established in newly conquered territory. With the kingdom's northward contraction the city lost some prestige and influence, but it remains important for the nearby gold mines in the eastern Red Lands. Garrisons of Khapeshan soldiers protect the mines and those that work within them, though there are few threats save for the occasional wild creature that strays in from the desert. Gold dug from the earth near Akhmis is refined outside the city then transported up river towards the delta where it is added to the royal treasuries.
