Akhmis is a city in the southern reaches of Khapesh. Far away from other major population centers or ports, only around 8,000 people live in Akhmis, making it the smallest major city in Upper Khapesh. The city is built around a large ancient fort, built thousands of years ago to guard against Khapesh’s long gone enemies on the southern border. In the distant past, Akhmis thrived as the last stopping point for travellers and settlers heading south to join communities established in newly conquered territory. Today the city is sparsely visited and shrinking due to emigration north. Large sections of the city have fallen into disrepair, as there is far more space than there are people to inhabit it. Akhmis supports itself agriculturally, supplemented by regular but infrequent visits from traders based downriver.
