The Great Northern Trail is a land route that connects Amshan with its colonies on the northern coast of the Kirnashal Sea. Though primarily a military trail used by the Amshani military to move reinforcements to and from and colonies, some settlers, merchants, and other travelers make use of the trail as well.
Though sailing through the Kirnashal Sea would seem on the surface to be a considerably faster and easier way of moving north and south, the trail is preferred due to the abundance of sea monsters that ply the waters. Still, the Great Northern Trail is treacherous in its own right, passing through poorly-mapped lands populated by dangerous creatures.
The rulers of Amshan claim but do not control much of the land along the trail - it is simply too wild and little populated to meaningful administer. The inhabitants of the only three major settlements along the trail, the two cities of Asumittu and Kukashru and the fortress of Floodhold, all consider themselves Amshani culturally, yet largely govern themselves. Much the same can be said for those residing in the small villages and outposts that can be found infrequently along the Great Northern Trail.
Route
Travelers along the Great Northern Trail begin in the south at Teredon or sometimes Apadan. The route largely remains close to the coastline of the Kirnashal Sea, not venturing far away from the water until it makes a turn north to save some distance and time on the way to Asumittu. It does the same across the Hunnubat Peninsula. Upon reaching Kukashru, the trail once again stays near the coast until it reaches Larkutla, the closest city in northern Amshani territory.
