Culichnan (pronounced coo-LEECH-nahn) are a type of squid-like creature that lives in space near Kishar. First encountered by Eitan elven explorers, culichnan are most common around the orbit of Abashmu but can more infrequently be found closer to the planet as well.
Culichnan are deceptively large. Though their bodies are only roughly three feet long, each of their ten tentacles can be up to fifty feet in length. Their overall mass remains small, however, as the tentacles quickly narrow and are less than two millimeters wide near their tips. Their black and white patterns, speckled like a starry background, are seemingly unique to each culichnan. The creatures move through the use of short-range teleportation with evidently no other means of locomotion. They feed exclusively on avil moss.
Although they never had the opportunity to confirm their ideas, some Eitan scholars hypothesized that culichnans shared a mind or were otherwise part of a greater entity. Dissections showed their internal organs to be incredibly simple, little more than digestive and circulatory systems, with nothing that could be definitively pointed to as a brain, yet the culichnan are capable of responding to threats and changes around them in a way that shows some degree of intelligence.
Aside from encounters with the elves building the aeroliths, terrestrial contact with, and understanding of, culichnans remains limited. Their existence is known only to some post-Eitan elven scholars and others who have delved into the ruined scholar-halls of the Cradle and Brightmarch.
