A dje (pronounced DZHAY) is a type of wildfire that occurs in the Aban Steppe. They are most frequent at the end of summer or beginning of fall, when the steppe is driest, but can occur year-round as well.
Most djes begin either when flamevines drop their petals, lightning strikes, or careless fire-setting by local tribes spreads out of control. Once started they spread rapidly through the dry grasses, with little to hinter their progress. Animals like the ekrek eagle can also contribute to the growth of a dje - these birds have learned to grab flaming material in their talons and deposit it elsewhere to flush out their prey.
During the months in which djes are particularly common, most targai tribes of Abanir remain ready to pack up and relocate at a moment's notice, as even with the knowledge gained from their scouts and shamans a dje can start and be upon them very rapidly.
Some peoples of the Aban also use the term dje to refer to any cataclysmic event, especially those seen as unavoidable, regardless of if a fire is involved.
