Tengu are one of the major ancestries found on Kishar. Highly adaptive and open to new ideas, tengu have settled across the world, melding their own cultural practices with those they encounter along the way.
History
Though the island of Meklaw is usually considered to be the homeland of the tengu, they have lived worldwide for millennia - it is sometimes said that a tengu can be found in every port no matter how small. Their ever-changing ways means that tengu typically do not view themselves as sharing ancestral history with each other, instead relating far more to their families or to the lands in which they now live.
Appearance
Corvid-like appearances are the most common amongst tengu but are far from the only form they can take. Some have feathers like those of the birds of tropical latitudes, while others look more akin to eagles or hawks. The coloring and shapes of tengu plumage and beaks are quite variable.
Location
Tengu live across the world, but in particular on the islands and coasts of the western Chaska Sea, near Meklaw where the oldest tengu settlements are located. Hellea has a particularly large population of tengu as well. Elsewhere they largely integrate into the established cities of others, rarely forming their own distinct neighborhoods or communities.
Those who have permanently left Meklaw have settled throughout the world in any community they can reach that will have them. Diasporic tengu generally do not hold particularly strongly to their precisely maintaining ancestral traditions, instead enthusiastically adopting the same practices and beliefs of those around them.
Culture
Tengu maintain their own cultural traditions at the same time they embrace other practices they encounter, often fusing the old and new into something different entirely. Historically tengu travelers and migrants have been very influential in the spread of customs, religions, and other practices, picking them up in one part of the world and carrying them to the next as they move.
The religion of Tengu is a syncretic combination of all others they have encountered. Most worship the Great Storyteller especially.
Lifespan
Tengu generally have a maximum lifespan of around 50 to 60 years.
