The Asterian Trail (pronounced as-TEER-ee-an) is a commonly used route used by those traveling to and from Asteria. While much longer than a direct route over the Sentinel Peaks from Hellea, the Asterian Trail is relatively more safe.
History
Though initially little more than a poorly charted route with sporadic landmarks, over the centuries the trail has become better maintained as it sees increased travel. Use of the trail has come in waves, mostly associated with periods of instability in Hellea. Traffic has become consistent enough that a few large towns or small cities have appeared along the route. most notably Valando and Eastbound.
Route
While most of the trail follows a single set path, there are two commonly used starting points. Some travelers start at Dymaza, travel up the Naveza River until they reach Tyne's Landing, then continue on land, while others begin at the Ephardian city of Apidima, travel overland until Third Bridge, then join the other route to continue on to Valando. Either way, the trail merges just south of the pass through the Sentinel Peaks. While the Dymaza route is seen as safer, mostly due to passing through less of the giants' territory, ships arriving at Dymaza are popular targets for the few remaining raiders out of Eiklend.
Dangers
Along with a variety of dangerous creatures, travelers along the Asterian Trail should keep a watchful eye for bandits, who have seen potential windfalls in the recently increased traffic. A number of giants also reside in the southern parts of the Trail, just south of the gap in the Sentinel Peaks, and sometimes see the travelers as easy targets.
