Opiter's Folly (pronounced OH-pih-ter) is an immense stone bridge near the Tela River within the Eastern Chaskan city-states. Now crumbling and in disuse, this bridge was built in the early years of the tenth millennium by the order of Opiter Iallius, scion of the Iallius senatorial family of Limyra. He intended to use the bridge to drive caravans traveling west along the Golden Path to Yurza rather than Aradet, and in doing so enrich himself both through levying tolls on its use and through taxes upon the arrival of merchants at Yurza, acquired through monopolizing a local trade coalition.
Unfortunately for Opiter, soon after the completion of the bridge an unusually strong storm, and a subsequent flood, shifted the course of the Tela River, leaving the bridge spanning nothing but now-dry land. With his family's fortunes sunk into the project and little to show for it, Opiter Iallius returned to Viridia, leaving the decaying structure behind. Today passing travelers sometimes rest under it, its shade a welcome respite from the hot Chaskan sun.
