Ko-Pala (pronounced KOH-PA-lah) are a type of fish native to the Na-Gaesa Ocean of the Wounds. An unusual variety of sunfish, they are notable for their propensity to jump out of the water and attack passing ships - the type of light sailing canoes common in the Wounds are easily damaged by the sheer force of the bulky fish landing on the vessels. It is commonly believed that this behavior is the result of the Ko-Pala following lights, and so many Fanakara and Keleta-Ru seafarers eschew the use of torches and other illumination on board their ships as much as possible at night. During the day there is no such risk, as the Ko-Pala bask in the light of the sun instead of seeking out smaller lights.
