Memory-eaters are a role found in certain post-Eitan elven societies, especially those of Brightmarch, the Laqto Rainforest, and parts of eastern Hinthial. Through magical rituals these figures take on, or "eat", the memories and personalities of the deceased, whether that be those who died recently or those who left the mortal world decades if not centuries ago. In doing so they gain all the knowledge previously possessed by those subsumed and are able to see the world as they did, potentially a great boon depending on whose memories were adopted. Memory-eaters frequently assist their communities in recovering long-lost information, recovering and maintaining oral traditions, and so forth.
The rituals that allow for memory-eating are some of the last surviving remnants of the ancient Eitan traditions of memory magic, a magical tradition that has otherwise fallen entirely out of use. It is limited by having the ritual components available, one of which is a memory shard of the individual whose memories are to be eaten.
