Khans are autocratic rulers most typically associated with the nomadic peoples of Abanir, and in particular with the orcish inhabitants of the steppe. While the title is hereditary in most places, khans frequently draw their legitimacy from their strength, whether personal or that of their armies, with those perceived as weak or compliant frequently deposed by their rivals or former allies.

As of Y9976*, the largest khanate and most significant khanate is Druzda. Hkarzda, in southwestern Thadria, also claims to be a khanate, yet a khan has never risen to the position. Other smaller khanates can be found across the Aban, where they often claim dominion over their nomadic subjects but not the land directly.

Places ruled by khans are called khanates.
