The Saret Trench (pronounced SAH-ret) is a long, oddly straight canyon in an otherwise largely flat part of the Sangora Desolation. The sand in the area was long ago stripped away by the winds, leaving behind a rough, rocky surface in which the Trench can be easily seen. This almost thirty five mile long gash in the landscape varies in width and depth, from several hundred feet wide down to only twenty, and up to a depth of a third of a mile.

Innumerable small alcoves and caves line the walls of the Saret Trench. These are not natural formations, but rather were carved by countless people over the millennia. Some were built as places to rest or store supplies, and others as burial sites, hiding spots, or something else entirely. In some parts of the Trench these alcoves become incredibly dense, cut into the sandstone walls like the cells of a honeycomb. A handful of people live semi-permanently in the canyon, making their homes out of these cavities in the sides of the Trench.

Many travelers along the trans-Sangora trade routes pass through the Saret Trench. Both the canyon itself and its many caves provide much-welcomed shade and respite from the heat of the sun.
