Areqals (pronounced AH-reh-call) are thalassocratic rulers most typically associated with tengu coastal settlements around the Three Great Seas outside of Meklaw. The position is granted authority over specifically and only the immediate area of land and water along the coastline, with no powers inland. Typically areqals are autocratic but govern alongside some type of republican council - one rules the sea and the other the land.
Places ruled by areqals are called areqalates.
