The Fayarannon Sea (pronounced FIE-ar-ann-non) is part of the southern Monumon, the steppe that stretches across most of the northern Land of the Sun and Moon. The Fayarannon Sea is quite low-lying and generally remarkably flat, and as a result becomes flooded for roughly half the year after the winter ends and the glacial melt from the Mulgaranyaran Mountains flows down, torrential spring rains arrive, and waters rise from the ground to inundate the region. Though this water rarely rises more than a foot over the grasslands on average, it is enough to be highly disruptive to all who live in the Sea. Nomadic peoples such as the Utnin tribes traditionally leave the area, usually heading north to the warming tundra of the Monumon, while the handful of large cities and other settlements remain, isolated on their hills and tells. When the floodwaters recede in late summer the herders return, joined by merchant caravans en route to the Dasuwattan Passage.

The grasses that grow throughout the Fayarannon Sea are well-adapted to the seasonal flooding, with roots that interlock together to form a web that remains tightly bound together even when the soil turns to mud.
