Calaina is a small city near the northeastern coast of the Cradle, populated almost entirely by aquatic elves and their land-dwelling kin. Unlike the two other remaining settlements of notable size on the island, Iynx and Vesuna, none of Calaina has been built on the Cradle proper but rather on a small, artificial island a quarter mile out to sea. This provides the city with some small degree of protection from the groundshakers, at least enough that the massive creatures seem to be dissuaded from approaching. As a consequence it has also given Calaina's inhabitants a degree of comfort knowing they can live without the constant fear and watchfulness that possesses the few others who have stayed on the Cradle.
Roughly a third of the population of Calaina lives on the isle itself, which was once an Eitan scholar-prince's sprawling research estate, while two thirds lives in aquatic homes that form a ring surrounding it.
