Areqals (pronounced AH-reh-call) are thalassocratic rulers most typically associated with tengu coastal settlements around the Three Great Seas outside of Meklaw. The position is granted authority over specifically the water and the immediate area along the coastline, with no powers inland. Typically areqals are autocratic but govern alongside some type of republican council - one governs the sea and the other the land.
Places ruled by areqals are called areqalates.
