Skygate is a small city in Kharakun. Unlike other major dwarven settlements in Kharakun, Skygate is primarily located on the surface, built where the Yarma River emerges from the mountains of the Fangs of Khurazar. Dwarves are not the city's only inhabitants, however, as it is also home to sun giants, humans, and others, who are all drawn to Skygate due to its status as a major center of trade in Kharakun. Those wishing to travel to other communities in Kharakun nearly always pass through Skygate, as direct and relatively safe tunnels run from the city to the various subterranean settlements beneath the mountains.
At the center of Skygate lies the River Roads, two parallel routes along either side of the Yarma River, leading from the entrance to the city into the mountains. Most buildings in the city are the typical stone and crystal construction found in other Kharakunite dwarven settlements, though they tend to be slightly oversized for its dwarven inhabitants in order to better accommodate the many larger folk who visit or live there. The Solar District on the northern edge of Skygate is home to the city's sun giant population.
Merchants wishing to buy or sell goods in Kharakun nearly always visit Skygate, and only rarely travel farther into the mountains. As a result the city serves as a major hub not only for trade but also for culture, as dwarves and giants from across the mountains all congregate together at Skygate.
The dwarves have built sluice gates into the mountain passage through which the river travels, near where it exits the underground. Through these they can block the flow of the river, though they have only ever put them to use once in order to hold back a sudden flood that would have otherwise swept through the center of the city.
The rulers of Kharakun, known as First Gatekeepers, are hereditary monarchs. The Sdoro dynasty has governed the city since Y9622*, though the current First Gatekeeper, Sdoro Dkar, only ascended to the throne in Y9963*.
