For most people, traveling significant distances is a long and often dangerous affair. Those with magical abilities, or the wealth to pay for the services of others who do, find travel to be much easier, quicker, and perhaps even enjoyable.
The quality of roads can vary widely. In some regions, roads are kept well-maintained and protected. On the other end of the scale, some parts of the world have no roads whatsoever, and one must chart their own way through the wilderness. Mounts and carriages, whether pulled by animals or something else, are common and relatively cheap ways to decrease the time required for a journey.
Wherever they are available, ships are almost always a better option than traveling over land. Whether in rivers, seas, or other waterways, boats are comparatively much faster and make it possible to avoid dangers along the roads - there is no guarantee, however, that the waters will be any safer. The vast majority of trade cargo throughout the world is moved by use of boats. See ships for more details.
Magical means of transportation are more exclusive, as one must either possess magical items, be capable of spellcasting, or have the money to pay for someone else to cast a spell. Spells like Phantom Chariot are sometimes used instead of animals for overland travel, and related spells exist for seacraft. Alternatively, casters can use spells like Overland Flight to simply fly to their destinations.
Though more uncommon, some individuals use items like Carpets of Flying as means of long distance transportation. These require great amounts of skill to create, however, and thus are quite expensive and limited in use.
Teleportation is used by those who can afford it and are located in relatively close proximity to an Anchor Site.
