The Golden Gear Tournament is an event held yearly in Peremoun's Bronzework Arena. Each team that attends the Tournament brings with them a mechanical construct, which then fight in one-on-one battles until a winner is declared.
While the Tournament is primarily used by the gnomish workshops of Peremoun to prove the superiority of their creations, teams from elsewhere in Khapesh and even farther afield regularly enter the challenge as well.
The Golden Gear Tournament is run and managed by the city of Peremoun, which generally views the event with a sense of pride. Betting is common during the Tournament, and some Peremounites are highly loyal to particular teams.
Rules of the Tournament
Though teams are given wide latitude as to the details of their constructs, there are a set of guidelines that must be followed.
- No collateral damage - Constructs are not permitted to hurt the teams, spectators, or judges. Excessive damage to the arena is banned as well.
- No magic - Constructs must be entirely mechanical in design. Use of magic in any sense is grounds for immediate disqualification.
- No repairs - Once a construct has been damaged, it cannot be repaired for its next match. Many teams use ablative armor as a workaround, letting an outer shell take damage and shedding it once it has outlived its usefulness.
- No additions - Constructs may not have parts added to them once the competition is underway.
- Limited materials - Not all materials are permitted to be used in the constructs. Materials that are harmful to life cannot be used, to protect the safety of the spectators, and at most two pounds of adamantine may be included.
- Maximum size - Constructs must be able to physically fit inside the Bronzework Arena. This rule was instituted after a team from Karka showed up with a fifty foot tall humanoid construct. Although it was quickly eliminated, the rule was put in place to prevent such a nuisance in the future.
- Limited time - Matches must conclude within three minutes. If the time limit is reached with no victor declared, both participants are eliminated.
Past champions
- The Cube (winner Y9912*) - The Cube is a steel cube, three feet to a side, with a six inch long "legs" on each of its eight vertices. It fought with a single punching arm that could be retracted into its body and strike out from any of the six faces.
- Scrap Scrap (winner Y9940*) - Scrap Scrap is a squat humanoid construct covered in an adamantine alloy plating. Three feet tall, headless, with elongated arms, a single eye, and a face in its chest, Scrap Scrap has since been fully repaired and granted sentience. Today Scrap Scrap works as a mascot and announcer for the Golden Gear Tournament.
