The Pit of Katabas (pronounced KAH-tah-bus) is an incredibly deep gash in the landscape east of the Arrajan Wilds. Over half a mile across at its widest, the rocky, ragged Pit leads directly into the Darklands. Creatures of the depths occasionally use the Pit to escape into the surface world, though most quickly find the sun and open skies to be oppressive. The Katabas River flows into the Darklands through the Pit, eventually reaching the Sea of Irkalla to the north.

A small city has grown within the Pit of Katabas, built into the Pit's walls deep enough that it receives almost no sunlight. Mostly inhabited by humans, drow, and caligni, simmering tensions keep the city constantly on edge. Zanbil, a nearby city to the south, has previously attempted to establish trade relationships with the city, but ceased after their last caravans were murdered and thrown into the Pit.
