According to the legends of the Fanakara tribes of the island, in the distant past a great hero dragged the many-armed sea beast Teru-Va-Lade to the shores of Kawhan, where he proceeded to slay it, permanently staining the sand with its blood. The hero's name has intentionally been forgotten out of fear he may have been a Si-Namuhu.
