With a lack of upkeep, the Tidewall has gradually disintegrated. The once almost 70 mile long solid wall of sand and rock, unbroken save for three gaps designed to allow the controlled passage of water and ships, has transformed into a series of barrier islands. Beach plants and animals of the shoreline long ago gained purchase on the islands, and today there is little remaining evidence that the Tidewall was artificially constructed. &lt;br /&gt;
